Brand Protection & Authentication

How Cru Bourgeois Gained Control Over Label Volumes Across 170 Châteaux

The Alliance behind the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc classification represents 170 châteaux across the Médoc region in Bordeaux. The classification stands for quality, consistency, and transparency, with strict requirements around traceability and authentication for every bottle released under the Crus Bourgeois designation.

For years, authentication labels had been part of this system. But as requirements evolved, one challenge became increasingly important: How to ensure not only that a bottle is authentic, but also that only the approved number of labels and bottles can exist in the first place. If too many labels are produced or distributed, more bottles could carry the designation than were officially approved.

At the same time, new regulatory requirements meant that wines needed to provide consumers with accessible nutritional and ingredient information.

To address these challenges, the Alliance selected a solution from KURZ SCRIBOS, a provider of brand protection, product authentication, and digital traceability solutions. The solution combines the ValiGate® security label with the SCRIBOS 360 IT platform. ValiGate® turns each bottle into a secure digital entry point. SCRIBOS 360 manages the digital processes behind it, including product data, regulatory information, label ordering, quota management, and volume control.

From Authentication to a Connected Digital System

With the introduction of the ValiGate® security label, each bottle received a unique digital entry point based on a copy proof security feature embedded in a QR Code.

A simple scan with a smartphone allows users to verify authenticity and access product information instantly, without the need for an app.

This includes:

  • Confirmation of authenticity
  • Nutritional information and ingredient lists
  • Individual château content

The bottle is no longer just a physical product. It becomes a direct communication channel between producer and consumer.

Making Regulatory Data Manageable for 170 Producers

Providing this level of transparency required structured data behind the scenes. For many of the 170 châteaux, this was a new requirement. Many were not yet used to managing product data digitally, and the introduction of nutritional and ingredient information added another layer of complexity.

The KURZ SCRIBOS team supported the entire onboarding process. Each château received individual guidance, including:

  • One to one onboarding sessions
  • Ongoing support throughout the setup process
  • Step by step assistance during setup

To make data management more efficient, structured templates were introduced within SCRIBOS 360. These templates use predefined fields and dropdown menus, allowing users to easily upload wine specific data and provide the URL linking to their nutritional and ingredient information page hosted on the Smart Bordeaux platform.

When a consumer scans the QR code on the label, the nutritional information page is displayed directly through this integration with the Smart Bordeaux platform. This ensures consistent, compliant data entry across all producers, regardless of their technical experience.

Controlling Label Volumes from the Start

Authentication and digital transparency are essential, but they do not prevent overproduction on their own. This is where SCRIBOS 360 becomes central. SCRIBOS 360 is a modular IT platform that connects different functions within one digital environment, including authentication, product data management, analytics, and ordering processes.

For Cru Bourgeois, this means that volume control is not managed separately from authentication or regulatory data. It is part of the same system. One of the modules within SCRIBOS 360 is the B2B Ordering module. This module allows the Alliance to define approved label quotas for each château. When a château places an order, the system checks whether the requested quantity is within the assigned quota before the order can be processed.

As a result, the Alliance gains direct control over label distribution across all participating châteaux.

Enforcing Volume Control Through the B2B Ordering Module

Through the B2B Ordering module, label orders are managed according to the approved quotas assigned to each château.

The system ensures that:

  • Orders are automatically checked against approved volumes
  • Available and used quantities are visible in real time
  • Every label is linked to an authorized production volume

This prevents overproduction, unauthorized label usage, and excess labels from entering the market. Volume control is not handled manually or after the fact. It is built directly into the ordering process and enforced by the system itself.

Full Transparency Across the Supply Chain

In addition to controlling volumes, SCRIBOS 360 provides complete visibility across all label orders.

The statistics dashboard allows the Alliance to:

  • Track how many labels have been ordered across all châteaux
  • Monitor activity over time
  • Identify ordering patterns and trends
  • Gain a complete overview of global label usage

For the first time, Cru Bourgeois has a centralized view of its entire labeling ecosystem, based on reliable data.

From a System Based on Trust to a Controlled Ecosystem

By combining authentication, structured data management, and volume control, SCRIBOS 360 transforms how label distribution is managed.

Each label is linked to a specific producer, a defined quantity, and a verified product.

Conclusion

The Cru Bourgeois implementation shows that modern brand protection requires more than authentication. It requires control over how many products are produced, how they are labeled, and how they are distributed.

With SCRIBOS 360, volume control becomes a central mechanism connecting production, labeling, and traceability in one system. At the same time, the IT platform provides a structured and scalable way to manage regulatory requirements such as nutritional and ingredient information. This data is maintained within the same system and made directly accessible at the point of scan.

The result is a unified approach where volume control, supply chain visibility, and regulatory compliance are fully integrated within one IT platform
