eBay is expanding its "Authenticity Guarantee" in the U.S.

The online marketplace eBay is expanding its "Authenticity Guarantee" in the U.S. to cover all new and pre-owned collectible trainers sold for USD 100 (approx. EUR 85) or more. Initially, particularly popular trainers will be verified by external experts as of the end of October 2020. From the start of 2021, all collectible trainers worth USD 100 or more will be authenticated.

eBay reports that it is cooperating with the independent team of experts at Sneaker Con, an organiser of international trainer trade fairs, to verify the shoes. Under this scheme, trainers sold on eBay will be shipped by their sellers to an independent authentication facility, where the shoes, their box and any accessories will be inspected. Provided they pass this inspection, the products will be forwarded to the purchasers with a label indicating their authenticity, which should also increase their resale value. "Authentication has become an expectation for today's consumers in categories of high passion and high value, and this programme makes eBay the most attractive platform for enthusiasts in these categories," says Jordan Sweetnam, SVP and General Manager of eBay North America. The authentication programme is also designed to verify returns, by ensuring that the goods returned to the seller are indeed those originally shipped.

Prior to this, in September, eBay launched an Authenticity Guarantee in the U.S. for certain watches worth over USD 2,000 (approx. EUR 1,700). eBay has recently been criticised in Germany, along with other online vendors, for selling counterfeit storage media on its platform.
