Brand Protection & Authentication

What is artificial intelligence and how does SCRIBOS utilize it?

Artificial Intelligence is transforming the business world fundamentally, including the area of brand protection. In the following article, we will provide a brief description of AI, its effects on the business world, and how we as a company are utilizing it now and in the future.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is a multidisciplinary field of computer science and engineering that aims to create systems or machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. In essence, AI seeks to simulate human cognitive functions, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and perception, using computer programs and algorithms.

There are two sub-sets of artificial intelligence, which are coined:

  1. Machine Learning
A subset of AI, machine learning focuses on developing algorithms that enable systems to learn from data and improve their performance over time. An example for this is the well-known app Spotify, which uses reinforcement learning to recommend songs to its users. Spotify analyzes its users song choices and then makes predictions based on these results.

  2. Deep Learning
As a subset of machine learning, deep learning involves artificial neural networks inspired by the human brain's structure. It has been instrumental in areas such as image and speech recognition or natural language processing. An application of deep learning can be found in natural language processing. NLP allows machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language. It's used in chatbots, language translation, sentiment analysis, and content generation.

What is its application in the real-world?

AI has a wide range of real-world applications, from automating repetitive tasks to assisting in complex decision-making processes. It is transforming industries like healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and transportation, offering new possibilities for efficiency, innovation, and problem-solving. As AI continues to evolve, it holds the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, from the way we work to the products and services we use, making it a field of great importance and relevance in the modern world.

What benefits can AI have on the business world?

AI has come a long way since its inception and has developed into an indispensable tool in the business world. It is reshaping the way companies operate and compete in a global economy. It can perform tasks faster than humans and see patterns and connections/correlations that regular algorithms cannot detect.

What are some examples of how it is reshaping the business world?

AI automates routine tasks, reducing operational costs and improving productivity for example AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants provide 24/7 customer support, leading to better customer satisfaction. Businesses use AI-driven systems to streamline processes and make faster, data-driven decisions., for example AI algorithms analyze vast amounts of data, extracting valuable insights that help companies make informed decisions, optimize production and supply chains, and predict market trends. AI can also aid in fraud detection, cybersecurity, and risk assessment.

AI can also become a catalyst for innovation, enabling the development of new products and services, such as self-driving cars, smart home devices, and advanced healthcare diagnostics. Thus, companies that leverage AI effectively gain a competitive edge. AI helps businesses stay ahead of the curve in a rapidly changing marketplace.

Can AI support in brand protection measures?

Artificial Intelligence can play a significant role in supporting brand protection measures for companies by supporting in detection, prevention, and enforcement efforts. It can support not only in online brand protection measures, but also in physical brand protection. One brand protection entails searching the internet illegal offers, while physical brand protection centers more on helping authenticate markings on physical products.

What are some examples how AI can support brand protection measures?

Authentication
AI-powered image recognition and computer vision systems can help consumers and companies verify the authenticity of products by scanning labels, barcodes, or packaging. Any discrepancies or irregularities can raise alarms.

Document Verification
AI can be used to verify the authenticity of official documents, such as certificates, licenses, or IDs. It checks for security features and anomalies that might indicate counterfeiting.

Internet of Things
Internet of Things (IoT) devices integrated with AI can track products in real-time. If a product is diverted or tampered with, AI algorithms can trigger alerts.

Pattern Recognition
AI algorithms can identify patterns and anomalies in data, helping companies detect unusual purchasing, shipping, or distribution patterns that might indicate counterfeit operations.

Marketplace Monitoring / Online Brand Protection
AI can scan e-commerce marketplaces and websites to identify and report listings of counterfeit products. This proactive monitoring can help companies take legal action and request removal of fake listings.

Customer Feedback Analysis
AI can analyze customer reviews and feedback to identify instances where customers complain about counterfeit products. This data can help companies pinpoint issues and track down counterfeiters.

Customer Education
AI-powered chatbots or virtual assistants can educate customers on how to spot counterfeit products. These tools can provide tips and guidance on what to look for when making a purchase.

Legal and Enforcement Support
AI can assist law enforcement agencies and legal teams in tracking down and building cases against counterfeiters by analyzing large volumes of data, including financial records and digital footprints.

How does SCRIBOS utilize AI?

As a company we focus on physical brand protection, therefore we utilize AI as a supporting tool in collecting and analyzing the data that is captured from the scans from our copy-protected markings.

Just to recap, our technology relies on the consumer scans, as this is the most efficient and scalable way to detect counterfeits in the market. As our solutions work without app, we set the barrier for scanning very low, which in turns gives us the chance to collect a large amount of data. More data makes also our utilization of AI more effective, as this technology needs a lot of data to give better results, as well a learn continuously.

By collecting and analyzing all this data, you, as the brand owner, can clearly differentiate original and fake scans in our digital platform SCRIBOS 360. Then our platform will create heat maps of these fake scans and identify regions and countries, where these fakes showed up. With the help of AI, action maps are created, where you can start targeted action like mystery shopping, raids and investigations. The benefit of utilizing AI here is that it can find common patterns in the data way faster and more effectively than a human can.

Currently we have a multiple AI projects in the works, which will give us a new way of determining a fake product based on set criteria and patterns. Furthermore, AI will help us with local and temporal scan retractability, which will help us track down counterfeit production sites and distribution centers way faster. In sum, AI helps us support our valued clients in their anti-counterfeiting efforts and will make sure that the measures get even more effective over time.
